(Report Courtesy of James McCarthy, PRO):
The Senior hurlers clinched the County Cup trophy after an exciting tussle with Granagh-Ballingarry at the Gaelic Grounds. Patrickswell made a lively start and registered two points from Seanie O’Brien and Jack Kelleher before Granagh-Ballingarry registered their first point. The remainder of the first half was thoroughly dominated by the ‘Well. Lar Considine struck a point before Jack Kelleher added two more scores to establish a 0-5 to 0-1 margin after fifteen minutes. The ‘Well struck a decisive blow when Kevin O’Brien stormed through the opposition defence and notched a fine goal. Jack Kelleher scored a further point to put 1-6 to 0-1 on the scoreboard. Granagh-Ballingarry managed to stem the tide with two unanswered points; however Patrickswell closed the first half with two additional points. The interval score was a healthy 1-8 to 0-3 lead.

The second half saw a resurgence by Granagh-Ballingarry. As the rain fell, they adapted quickly to the slippery conditions. While Barry Foley notched the opening point of the second half, our opponents were in the ascendancy and rewarded by a goal and two points. The deficit was four points when Brian Murray made a fine save to thwart Granagh-Ballingarry. Lar Considine settled the nerves with two points to cancel our opponents’ points. The clock showed ten minutes remaining with Patrickswell holding a narrow 1-11 to 1-8 lead. Jack Kelleher’s point gave the ‘Well some breathing space before Granagh-Ballingarry responded in kind. The South Men went looking for an equalising goal, but Brian Murray was in sparkling form between the posts. The game was put beyond doubt when Lar Considine exploited gaps in Granagh-Ballingarry’s defence to calmly take his goal during injury time. The final result was a 2-12 to 1-9 triumph for the ‘Well. James Mann accepted the County Cup and Brian Murray was deservedly awarded Man of the Match. Congratulations to the players and management for claiming the title.
